Oppo Find X5 review

When it comes to phone reviews, we had a lot of fun with the Oppo Find X5, which is typically a good indicator. It's a device that's a joy to use and performs admirably in almost every category, including photo quality, battery life, and screen clarity.

By the way, you didn't miss the Oppo Find X4: the X5 is one of the successors of the Oppo Find X3 series, which debuted in 2021, and it will be available with the Oppo Find X5 Pro and Oppo Find X5 Lite. With a starting price of around £749 in the UK, this phone faces competition from the Samsung Galaxy S22 (£819 for the same 256GB of storage) and the iPhone 13 (£829 for the same 256GB of storage).

However, the X5 is priced lower than other top-tier flagships, and that is how Oppo is marketing this phone. This phone is definitely worth your attention if you want to save a little money without making too many concessions.

As previously stated, the phone is impressive in every way. The build quality and design are excellent, the AMOLED screen is brilliant and crisp, the performance is stutter-free and lag-free – even when the most demanding programs and games are running – and the Oppo Find X5's rear camera shoots excellent images (it's even capable after the sun has set).

Why, then, isn't this the ideal phone? There are several drawbacks, including the absence of waterproofing, a 2x optical zoom restriction on the rear camera and a ColorOS Android overlay that we don't particularly like. Those are tiny irritants, but they are irritants nevertheless, and they ought to be mentioned.

With so many smartphones on the market right now, it's difficult to say whether the Oppo Find X5 hits the sweet spot between mid-rangers and flagships, or if it's overshadowed by phones higher and lower on the price scale – it all depends on how much you like its aesthetics and what you value in a new smartphone.

Price and availability of the Oppo Find X5

  • The price range begins at £749.
  • Now available for purchase.
  • There will be no sales in the United States or Australia.
The Oppo Find X5 is available today for £749 and higher from a variety of UK stores, including Amazon(opens in new tab) and Carphone Warehouse (opens in new tab). Oppo also sells the phone directly to consumers (opens in a new tab). The device will cost around $980 / AU$1,285, although, as is customary with Oppo phones, it will not be accessible in the United States or Australia.

Oppo Find X5 in for review ( Design )

  • Sleek and polished.
  • The back is matte glass.
  • There is no waterproofing.
The Oppo Find X5 is definitely a well-made piece of hardware, and we particularly enjoy the matte back finish: smooth, textured, easy to hold, and not as prone to fingerprints as phones with shiny, reflecting backs are. We give the X5 two thumbs up and hope that other manufacturers adopt the same strategy in the future.

The back camera array is oddly formed, but it doesn't look horrible, and the phone as a whole is really attractive. Depending on your location, you may choose between black, white, or purple — we tested the modest, sleek-looking black model, which we think is the finest of the group.

With a 6.55-inch screen, the Oppo Find X5's total measurements are 160.3 mm x 72.6 mm x 8.7 mm (that's 6.31 inches x 2.86 inches x 0.34 inches), and the smartphone weighs 196 grams (6.9 ounces). In terms of weight and screen size, it falls between the Oppo Find X5 Pro and the Oppo Find X5 Lite, however, because of some very low bezels, it's actually somewhat slimmer and shorter than the Lite edition.

As you look at the phone, the power button is on the right, and the volume controls are on the left. The SIM tray, USB-C connector, and a single speaker are all located at the bottom of the device; another thin speaker is built in the bezel at the top. The silver metal frame around the borders adds to the sleek and polished appearance.

This device, unlike the Oppo Find X5 Pro, lacks IP68 waterproofing and dustproofing, so you'll have to be a little more careful while taking it about. It's one of the trade-offs you make for a lower price, but all things considered, the Oppo Find X5 is a stylish smartphone that you won't be ashamed to take out of your pocket or purse.

Oppo Find X5 in for review ( Display )

Oppo Find X5 review

  • AMOLED display with a 6.55-inch diagonal.
  • Victus is made of slightly curved Gorilla Glass.
  • The highest refresh rate is 120Hz.
The Oppo Find X5's 6.55-inch AMOLED screen is slightly curved along the sides and has a maximum brightness of 1,000 nits, HDR10+ compatibility, and a high refresh rate of 120Hz. It's one of the most prominent features of this smartphone, and it's only broken up by a little selfie camera cutout in the upper left corner.

This panel has a resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels and a 20:9 aspect ratio, resulting in a crisp screen that displays text and other details clearly and legibly. Because of the high maximum brightness level and the OLED technology used here, colors truly pop, and blacks are also astonishingly deep.

It's a display that impresses with just about any form of application, whether it's displaying games with quick action on the screen or social networking photo slideshows. Oppo has also given several very lovely animated wallpapers, which lend an added touch of sophistication.

Oppo Find X5 Camera test

  • Rear camera with three lenses.
  • The optical zoom reaches a maximum of 2x.
  • Excellent pictures in low light.
Even though the Oppo Find X5 cameras aren't the finest on the market in terms of camera performance and photo quality, you'll get some fantastic shots from them. The X5's triple-lens module, which includes a 50 MP wide lens, a 13 MP telephoto lens, and a 50 MP ultrawide lens, won't let you down no matter what lighting conditions you're shooting in.

While the phone's 2x optical zoom isn't very spectacular, the photographs it captures are clear, vivid, and detailed. The transition to ultrawide mode is seamless, and photographs captured in that format are free of distortion and color shift. All you have to do is point the camera, click the shutter button, and you'll have a high-resolution photograph.

Low-light images are often excellent as well, albeit they take a few seconds longer to shoot and process. While some information is lost and the colors are oversaturated at times, you may still acquire some really useful shots. The front-facing single-lens 32 MP wide camera is also great.

The Oppo Find X5's back camera is one of the places where the additional money you're spending – when compared to lesser mid-range devices – truly pays off. It's a camera system that's quick, adaptable, and precise.

The X5's back camera isn't quite up to the level established by more costly phones at the top of the flagship ladder – the automated HDR doesn't always provide stunning results in darker portions of photos – but it holds its own.

In recent years, phone cameras have evolved by leaps and bounds, and the Oppo Find X5 is proof that you don't have to spend a lot of money to get great results. With a few caveats, such as the fact that the optical zoom is limited to 2x, we believe most users will be pleased with the photographs this phone can take.

Specification and results

Oppo Find X5 review

  • It's powered by a Snapdragon 888 processor.
  • The onboard memory of up to 12GB.
  • The stereo speakers are good.
The Oppo Find X5 is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 888 processor, which was released last year as the company's flagship mobile processor, while the Oppo Find X5 Pro is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, which is the company's top mobile processor for 2022. In terms of performance, you won't notice much of a difference in practice, but the Pro model may just last you a little longer before you need to update.

The machine we tested included 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Other configurations are available, including 128GB of storage and 12GB of RAM, although storage cannot be expanded with a memory card.

Those specifications won't let you down for almost any task that a contemporary smartphone must perform.

In our testing, those specifications translated to Geekbench scores of 782 (single-core), 3362 (multi-core), and 4546 (multi-core) (OpenCL). Benchmarks don't tell the complete performance story of course, but that's more or less on pace with the Pro model. This might be an area where you can save money without having to make too many sacrifices.

When utilizing the Oppo Find X5, we had no issues in terms of performance. Menus pop up quickly, games run well, and navigating between apps was a breeze on the phone. During our time with this phone, we didn't detect any slowness at all. While we can't guarantee anything in the future, on paper, this is a gadget that should last you a long time.

As you'd expect at this stage, 5G is there and proper, and you can use both a real nano-SIM and an eSIM on the phone at the same time if necessary. We were thrilled with the stereo speakers, which do an excellent job of playing music, podcasts, and audio alongside a video, from quiet talk to louder sounds.

Oppo Find X5 in for review ( Software )

Oppo Find X5 review

  • ColorOS on Android 12
  • There are several customizing options.
  • There are a lot of pre-installed applications.
The phone's operating system is Android 12 with ColorOS on top. ColorOS is OK, however, there are a few more preloaded applications than we'd want - AliExpress, Amazon Shopping, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, and others – than we'd like. You'll also find identical programs, like Oppo's own Photos app and Google Photos.

ColorOS, like other Chinese-developed Android variants, is a complex operating system with a plethora of settings and modifications to fiddle with. Some are more useful than others; for example, we're not sure how beneficial the Smart Sidebar, which allows you to rapidly access your preferred applications through a pop-up overlay, is.

While we favor the simpler, more straightforward stock Android seen on Google's Pixel phones, your results with ColorOS may vary. In terms of how much there is to discover, it can't be blamed. Of course, because Android is Android, you can simply overhaul the OS and remove most of Oppo's goodies.

Oppo Find X5 in for review ( Battery life )

oppo find x5 review

  • The battery capacity is 4,800mAh.
  • It lasts a second day.
  • Charging at a rate of 80 watts through a cable.
The Oppo Find X5 has a 4,800mAh battery that lasts throughout the day. While we didn't put the phone through any particularly strenuous tests, we found that we had at least 40% battery life at the end of each day — this is a phone that can easily last a second day, and maybe longer if you're cautious.

The battery level declined by 7% every hour during video streaming (with the display set to maximum brightness), equating to about 14-15 hours of video viewing in total. Battery loss was closer to 12% per hour for more intense applications like step-by-step navigation utilizing the screen and GPS readings. Even so, that's extremely remarkable.

Here you'll find rapid 80W charging, wireless charging at 30W, and even reverse 10W charging (so smaller devices like earbuds can be charged up on the back of the phone). Those are good features, but you don't get the Pro model's quick 50W wireless charging, which is something to consider when comparing the X5 lineup.

Is the Oppo Find X5 a good buy?

If you want to buy it, you should...

You're looking for a high-quality camera: It has obvious limits when compared to the greatest flagships, but the back camera here wowed us a lot, and it should be more than adequate for most people.

Fast charging is a priority: Although the Pro variant has a faster wireless charging rate, the Oppo Find X5's 80W wired and 30W wireless charging speeds are still worth consideration.

You'll need a long-lasting battery: We can't speak to the battery life of the Oppo Find X5 over months or years, but we can tell that it performed admirably in our testing - a big positive.

If you don't want to buy it...

You're on a tight budget: The Oppo Find X5 is less expensive than top-tier flagships, but it will still set you back a significant amount of money. You might be able to get a better deal somewhere else on the market.

You'd like 2022 components: We have no issues about the Snapdragon 888 CPU in this phone's performance, but it was released in 2021 and will soon show its age.

Waterproofing is a must: Because the Oppo Find X5 lacks any type of waterproofing, use it with caution. You might wish to select the Pro model instead, which has an IP68 rating.
